▶ DESCRIPTION
I am growing old myself, but there are few things that I can remember so well as were the days of my youth. I have a most distinct recollection of the joys and the sorrows, the hopes and the fears, the temptations and the difficulties, the mistaken judgments and the misplaced affections, the errors and the aspirations, which surround and accompany a young man's life. If I can only say something to keep some young man walking in the right way, and preserve him from faults and sins, which may hurt his prospects both for time and eternity, I shall be very thankful. There are four things which I propose to do

I. I will mention some general REASONS why young men need exhorting.
II. I will note some special DANGERS which young men need to be warned about.
III. I will give some general COUNSEL which I beg young men to receive.
IV. I will set down some special RULES OF CONDUCT which I strongly advise young men to follow.

On each of these four points I have something to say, and I pray to God that what I say may do good to some soul.

▶ AUTHOR
Ryle was a strong supporter of the evangelical school and a critic of Ritualism. He was a writer, pastor and an evangelical preacher. Among his longer works are Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century (1869), Expository Thoughts on the Gospels (7 vols, 1856–69), Principles for Churchmen (1884). Ryle was described as having a commanding presence and vigorous in advocating his principles albeit with a warm disposition. He was also credited with having success in evangelizing the blue collar community. His second son, Herbert Edward Ryle also a clergyman, became Dean of Westminster.

Thoughts For Young Men J C Ryle Collection Book 3 edition by J C Ryle Religion Spirituality eBooks

Short. Convicting. Easy to read. Relevant.

There is a lot packed into this little booklet by J.C. Ryle, and though most of it is geared towards the wandering young man--men of all walks of life will find it beneficial. I found great wisdom in the final chapter regarding something that is not spoke much of today: idleness. "He that would be safe from the acts of evil, must widely avoid the occasions." How often do we young men fall into all kinds of sin simply because in our doing nothing we give opportunity to the Devil.

Ryle then goes to show how worldly entertainment is often objectionable because it "sows seeds of an earthly frame of mind." This is not legalism. This is wisdom. I fear that much of my generation has let its guard down primarily through idleness and entertainment (It is not THAT bad, right?)--and we wonder why temptation is so strong?! We must heed the warning: "Do not always be trying to see how near you can allow the enemy of souls to come, and yet escape him."

There are a bunch more tidbits in this booklet (you can read it all in one sitting). Ryle has a great closing section on the importance of prayer. "It is the only strength of this (prayer) that you will get onward towards the mountain of God." People rarely talk like this anymore. In Ryle's book we see desperation and a real faith based pursuit of holiness. May we young men take heed!

Thoughts For Young Men J C Ryle Collection Book 3 edition by J C Ryle Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This book is a must have for every young man, and even older men as well. This book gives awesome wisdom and insights as to how sin can affect the life of a man. I love it when he simply stated "....youth sows what old age must reap...". This quote has embedded itself in my soul, and makes me think twice before I speak and act. Life and death is surely in the power of the tounge!
The book contains 4 chapters that are likely transcriptions of 4 related sermons or messages on the importance of younger men adopting and living a God-honoring lifestyle sooner rather than later. Each message challenges men of college age to late-twenties to abandon "sowing their wild oats" for a life of purity and Christian discipline. The prose is stark and unflinching in both its honesty and its earnestness -- the writer/speaker, apparently of middle-age at the time these messages were first delivered, minces no words when speaking of the painful regrets most men carry throughout their lives on account of unwise decisions and sinful actions taken back when they were "too young to know better."

These messages pull no punches and the unflinching condemnation of Sin -- yes, some preachers still use that word in its original Biblical context -- will no doubt disturb those readers not accustomed to straight talk about the teachings of Jesus on choosing a life of purity and full obedience to God. Our discussion of this book over 4 or 5 weekly studies engendered some serious but lively discussions on the differences between what the World calls a "good" life and the behaviors that our society tolerates today, in contrast to what the Word of God commands for Followers of the Way. There are many challenging statements in these chapters, some of which may sound "Puritanical" or "judgmental" at first, but are quickly revealed to come directly from Scripture.

If your church is not accustomed to hearing the Gospel proclaimed boldly, without apology, this will be a tough slog for many of you; but if you're willing to be challenged, and to face your own shortcomings honestly, without guilt, these teachings will prove very valuable to you and the younger men in your life. Some sections will seem repetitive at first; that's how the writer emphasizes his key points. But if you picture the words actually being preached to a large gathering it soon becomes obvious that Brother Ryle is entreating his audience, especially its younger members, to treat these admonitions seriously, and to act on them without further delay.

For this speaker, "sooner" means NOW. Highly recommended.
Being used at our Classical school as a guideline for discussions with 7th grade boys & their Dad's. Headmaster of our school initiated the lunch and discuss with this gem. A little heavy but provokes great discussions about how men should honor, respect and treat women from a biblical worldview along with appropriate behavior for men as well. Short but worth a read!
Every single child, boy, and man should read this book. Although it says "young men" I truly believe that this book is beneficial for every age. It is a short book but it is a very dense read. I recommend reading this book with pens, highlighters, and a notebook nearby. This is the type of book that has the potential to change this generation. If young men took this book and ran with it, our world would look like a different place.
